CMA Foundation announces support for The Winds of Change

As part of its continued commitment to advancing reconciliation in Indigenous health, the CMA Foundation is announcing a $3M commitment to The Winds of Change, a new Indigenous-led initiative from Health Standards Organization (HSO) to develop the National Standard of Canada on Cultural Safety and Humility.

The new standard will be distinctions-based, person-centred and reflective of the health and wellness priorities and goals of First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, families and communities.

Improving health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples must proceed with Indigenous voices leading the way, and The Winds of Change demonstrates a new way forward in partnership with Indigenous Peoples from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

The Winds of Change will include:

  1. A new Indigenous-led National Standard of Canada on Cultural Safety and Humility (CAN/HSO 75001:2026)
  2. A suite of cultural safety and humility and anti-racism implementation tools and resources
  3. Preparation and testing the standard for use by health and social service organizations across Canada.

The name The Winds of Change is inspired by Elder Gerry Oleman, co-chair of the British Columbia Cultural Safety and Humility Technical Committee. “I tell people, the winds of change are here,” says Elder Oleman. “Some of you might just feel a small little breeze, but it’s here.”
