The board of directors of the CMA Foundation is responsible for overseeing charitable giving to registered Canadian charities that further excellence in health care and that support Canadian physicians and physician learners.
Dr. Christopher Carruthers, Chair
Dr. Carruthers spent most of his career practising orthopedic surgery at The Ottawa Hospital, where he served as chief of staff for 10 years. He is presently chair of the board of directors at the Mach-Gaensslen Foundation and is past chair of the Carleton University and Ottawa International Airport Authority boards.
Dr. Leisha Hawker
Dr. Hawker is a family physician with certified added competence in addiction medicine at North End Community Health Centre in Halifax. She is also an addiction medicine physician at Regency Park Opioid Disorder Clinic, a family physician at Newcomer Health Clinic and an assessor and provider of medical assistance in dying.
Dr. David Naylor
Dr. Naylor is a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, and former dean of medicine and president of the institution. He is on the board of Northwest Healthcare Properties Real Estate Investment Trust and the editorial oversight committee of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
W. Iain Scott
Mr. Scott has many years of executive-level experience in law, financial services and academia. He became the first-ever chair and CEO of McCarthy Tétrault in 2002, and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario in 2011.
Dr. Guruswamy Sridhar
Dr. Sridhar is the medical director of the Sleep Disorders Program and consultant in respiratory medicine for the Saskatchewan Health Authority. He is the current representative for Saskatchewan on the CMA Board of Directors and is also chair of the CMA’s Audit and Finance Committee.
Ms. Tory is retired as a partner from Ernst & Young LLP, where she led their health care and not-for-profit industry groups. She currently serves on many boards, including Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, MaRS Discovery District and George Brown College.
Dr. Suzanne Strasberg, Chair, CMA Board of Directors
Dr. Strasberg works in Toronto as a member of the Jane Finch Family Health Team, where she’s the lead physician responsible for submission of budgets to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and for development of the business and operational plan for the corporation. She has worked closely with the CMA as a board member, as co-chair of the CMA committee on public/private interface, as a member of a committee dedicated to health care and education and as a General Council delegate.
Tim Smith has been the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA’s) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) since 2015. In March 2019, he also became CEO of the CMA Group of Companies, including CEO of CMAH 2018, and CEO and board chair of CMA Investco Inc.
Dr. Celina White
Dr. White is a recently retired family physician from Nova Scotia who worked as a mental health general practitioner and chronic pain physician. She is the former district chief of staff of the Cumberland Health Authority, which provides health care services in the northern-most part of Nova Scotia.
